Jodie Grinham Secures Bronze in Thrilling Finish Despite Late Pressure

The 26-year-old Turkish archer, Oznur Cure Girdi, cemented her status as a para archery star at the Paris 2024 Paralympics with a remarkable performance that will be remembered for years to come. Cure Girdi's journey to Paralympic glory began with an extraordinary display in the ranking round, where she shattered the compound women's world record by scoring over 700 points, a feat that signaled her incredible form.

As the competition moved into the elimination rounds, Cure Girdi maintained her exceptional performance, ultimately capturing her first Paralympic gold medal. In a tense and thrilling final, she faced Iran's Fatemeh Hemmati, emerging victorious with a close 144-141 scoreline.

The final match was tightly contested from the start, with the two archers tied after the first end. However, as the match progressed, Cure Girdi began to pull ahead, consistently shooting 10s and nines to gradually build a crucial 2-point lead. By the time they approached the final end, she had extended her lead to 3 points, a margin that she fiercely protected to ensure the gold medal would not slip away.

Throughout the competition, Cure Girdi demonstrated her dominance, asserting herself as the top contender in every match. Her skill, focus, and determination made her appear unstoppable, and indeed, she was.

Reflecting on her achievement, the young archer expressed her confidence, saying, "I believed in the medal already after the ranking round and my world record." Her belief was justified, as she went on to secure her place at the top of the podium.

The moment the final arrow hit its mark, Cure Girdi was overcome with emotion, bursting into tears as she celebrated her triumph. "I believed I would reach it! And now it's around my neck! I'm so happy. I worked really hard for this. It's great!" she exclaimed, her joy and pride evident as she held her hard-earned gold medal.

Oznur Cure Girdi celebrated her victory with overwhelming emotion, crying and shouting in joy, but she also demonstrated remarkable composure during the most critical moments of the competition. Reflecting on her ability to stay calm under pressure, the newly crowned Paralympic Champion revealed that it was the result of meticulous preparation.

"Actually, we worked very hard on this, too," Cure Girdi explained. "We have a huge team, and we practice a lot with our psychologist. During the preparation period, we did many exercises to control my nerves. It helped me during the competition," she added.

Cure Girdi shared that her training involved simulating high-pressure situations, which allowed her to become accustomed to handling stress. "I tried all those things, I tried to feel the pressure during my training, and then it was easy to control it during the competition. I was used to that. I'm happy I could handle the pressure."

While Cure Girdi celebrated her gold medal, silver went to Iran's Fatemeh Hemmati, who earned her place in the final after defeating the defending champion, Phoebe Paterson Pine, in the semifinal. Unfortunately for Paterson Pine, her quest for a medal ended in heartbreak as she lost the bronze medal match to her British teammate, Jodie Grinham.

Grinham’s journey to winning the bronze medal was nothing short of inspiring, as she competed while being 6.5 months pregnant. Her incredible determination and performance drew widespread applause and admiration from the crowd, making her achievement one of the standout moments of the competition.

the third end and maintained her advantage. With just one shot remaining, she needed to score a ten to secure the bronze medal or at least a nine to force a tie. However, her final shot fell short, landing an eight, and leaving the door open for her opponent.

Jodie Grinham, who was facing immense pressure, rose to the occasion in spectacular fashion. "Especially with archery, you have to shoot the last arrow. The match is not over until the last arrow," Grinham remarked, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the sport.

In a clutch performance, Grinham delivered two perfect 10s in her final shots to clinch the victory and secure the bronze medal. "I knew going into that last end that I needed to produce good shots. I needed 10s. And, thankfully, that's exactly what I did," she explained.

Grinham acknowledged the difficulty of competing against her teammate, Paterson Pine, but recognized that her ability to apply pressure ultimately led to her success. "I put the pressure on Phoebe, which is heartbreaking, she's my teammate, but it worked in my favor. And that meant I came away with bronze," she said.

This achievement marked Grinham’s first individual Paralympic medal, a significant milestone in her career. Despite being 6.5 months pregnant, she demonstrated extraordinary determination and skill, earning widespread admiration. Looking ahead, Grinham expressed her unwavering commitment to the sport, stating that she fully intends to compete at the next Paralympics in Los Angeles, USA, even as she prepares to become a mother.

As the competition in Paris continues, the spotlight shifts to the W1 and compound men's elimination and medal matches, set to take place on Sunday
