Labor Day Shopping: What's Open and Closed at Walmart, Costco, and Your Favorite Restaurants
On Monday, September 2, many services and businesses will observe Labor Day, meaning some will be closed while others remain open. Banks and post offices, for instance, will not be operating in observance of the holiday, and the stock market will also be closed. However, most major restaurant chains, grocery stores, and retail outlets will continue to serve customers.
Walmart, Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, and Target are among the businesses that will stay open on Labor Day, allowing people to shop and dine as usual. A notable exception is Costco, which will close its warehouses for the holiday.
Labor Day is a federal holiday dedicated to honoring the "social and economic achievements of American workers." Its origins date back to the late 19th century when labor activists advocated for a day to recognize the significant contributions workers have made to the country's strength, prosperity, and well-being. The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. By 1894, 23 states had recognized the holiday, and President Grover Cleveland officially made the first Monday in September a national holiday on June 28, 1894.
So, as you plan for Labor Day, here’s a quick guide on what will be open and what will be closed this year.
