San Francisco 49ers' Ricky Pearsall Injured in Attempted Robbery; Teen Suspect Arrested, Police Report
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, pictured during a workout in August, was involved in a frightening incident on Saturday afternoon. According to both the team and local police, Pearsall was shot in the chest during an attempted robbery in San Francisco. The 49ers released a statement confirming that Pearsall is currently in serious but stable condition as he recovers from the injury. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. PT when a 17-year-old boy attempted to rob Pearsall at gunpoint while he was walking alone. An altercation ensued between the two, during which both Pearsall and the suspect sustained injuries, according to the San Francisco Police Department
San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott provided additional details regarding the shooting involving 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall. He confirmed that, as the suspect is a juvenile, any charges will initially be filed in juvenile court. Authorities are continuing to review the evidence to determine the next steps.
After the incident, officers on the scene provided medical assistance to both Pearsall and the suspect before transporting them to the hospital for further treatment, according to the police report.
While the exact motive behind the shooting is still unclear, Chief Scott emphasized that there is no indication Pearsall was targeted because of his status as a professional football player. The investigation currently points to the incident being an attempted robbery, and police are fairly certain of this conclusion.
Chief Scott also mentioned that the suspect appeared to be acting alone, and only one firearm was involved in the altercation. The gun has since been recovered by police. It remains uncertain how many times Pearsall was shot or what the suspect intended to steal. The police are currently reviewing video footage to gain more insight into the event. Although Pearsall was stable enough to speak with officers, Chief Scott noted that further confirmation of details is still required as the investigation continues.
The San Francisco 49ers expressed their concern, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family” on Saturday night.
San Francisco Mayor London Breed, speaking at a news conference, described the attempted robbery as “a terrible and rare incident in Union Square.” She expressed hope for Pearsall’s recovery and eagerly anticipated his return to the field, saying, “I look forward to seeing him recover and get back on the field.”
Police Chief Bill Scott also voiced his shock and sadness over the incident. He condemned the violence, stating, “This kind of violence has no place in our city and will never be tolerated. My heart goes out to Mr. Pearsall and his family, and I wish him a speedy recovery.” Scott praised the police for their swift action and assured that justice would be pursued.
Ricky Pearsall, a rookie wide receiver drafted by the 49ers with the 31st pick in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, had a notable collegiate career. Before joining the NFL, the 23-year-old played three years at Arizona State and two years at Florida. In his final collegiate season with Florida, he recorded 965 receiving yards and six touchdowns.
